The River Hudson (1859)
From Hudson a trip can be made to Columbia, 5 miles distant, and to Claverack Falls, 8 miles off. Lebanon Springs, 36 miles from Hudson, are reached by taking the Hudson & Berkshire line of cars.
Shaker Village is at New Lebanon and about 6 miles from the Springs. If the tourist can devote time enough for a brief visit to the interesting village of the Society of Shakers, he will observe a place of primitive and simple life that will amply repay him for all the trouble and expense he may incur.
Our voyage is now drawing to a close. The route begins to lose much of its Highland character but is still of a highly picturesq.ue and interesting description. Directly opposite Hudson is Athens, a pretty village of 1,500 inhabitants. Passing on, we successively reach Stockport, Coxsackie and Stuyvesant, which are thriving little towns of from 1,000 to 2,000 inhabitants each, and come to Kinderhook Landing, five miles back of which lies the town of Kinderhook. This place is somewhat famous as having been the birthplace of Martin Van Buren, ex-President of the United States who still resides here on, his estate of "Lindenwold," some two miles south of the village.
